US Travelers and Layovers to PVR: Update on COVID travel restrictions

Are you looking into scheduling another healing visit to Puerto Vallarta?

Many of you had postponed your yearly trips to PV for about 2 years and are likely excited to visit with fewer restrictions! We understand that traveling during COVID times can be challenging, especially with different traveling rules changing overnight.

In this email, we’ll share some updates regarding travel restrictions if you are traveling from the USA, including layovers from Canada and Europe. In the next email, we’ll address specific updates for Canadians with direct flights to Mexico.

We want to make it easier for you and help you stay up to date with the most recent information to make your travels as stress-free as possible.

Here’s what’s new in the USA:

Woman wearing face mask at airport while traveling

As of April 18, 2022, the TSA will no longer enforce its Security Directives and Emergency Amendment requiring mask use on public transportation and transportation hubs.

The CDC continues to recommend that people wear masks in indoor public transportation settings at this time.

See statement here.

How does this affect your plans to visit Puerto Vallarta?
Wearing a mask on a domestic flight is currently optional on all major U.S. carriers for both passengers and crew.

So, if you are planning on taking a flight with several layovers in the US, it will be optional for you to wear a mask.** But for your final flight destination to PV, you may be required to wear a mask. Follow the direction of your airline attendants.

Do I still need to wear a mask at the Puerto Vallarta airport? Yes.  As of now, the use of masks is mandatory for every person in any public transportation, as well as commercial establishments or services with general access like airports.

Do I need a Covid test before flying back to the United States?
Yes, indeed. Every traveler aged 2 and older flying into the United States, regardless of vaccination status or citizenship, is required to show a negative COVID-19 viral test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before you board your flight.

Are tourist services open?

Absolutely! With a strong sense of responsibility, tours and recreational activities in Puerto Vallarta are operating normally, with a maximum capacity of 85%, reason why we recommend booking in advance.

Restaurants operate at 90% with hours according to license.
Bars and clubs operate at 75% with hours according to license.

Are you traveling from Canada? Do not despair, we’ll cover all you need to know about traveling from Canada on our next post! 😉

**While most U.S. airports no longer require masks for travelers or staff, there are some exceptions: New York’s John F. Kennedy International and La Guardia airports, Philadelphia International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport. Each airport makes its own rules, so it’s possible these requirements could change. So do your research before traveling.
