What is Biological Dentistry?

Biological dentistry is a non-traditional approach to dental treatments that emphasizes the use of biocompatible materials and techniques that seeks to prevent intoxication (by heavy metals and other substances) and promote optimal overall oral health and well-being. In Europe, North America and Mexico, biological dentistry is also referred to as biocompatible or holistic dentistry.

At Holistic Bio Spa, we have a certified and licensed holistic dentist in Mexico that provides holistic dental treatments at our Puerto Vallarta clinic and now at our new Tijuana outpatient dental clinic!

Dr. Ismael Quintino joins our panel of doctors as an expert who understands the connection between oral health and the health of the entire body. A certified and licensed bio dentist, Dr. Ismael practices the philosophy of the Huggins Protocol, which promotes the use of non-toxic materials, such as mercury, BPA, and other potentially harmful substances.

Our holistic dentist in Mexico also uses techniques familiar to many of our patients such as ozone therapy, which uses ozone gas to disinfect and treat dental infections and surgical sites to avoid post-contamination. Many health-savvy patients prefer biological dentistry because they experience better oral health and overall health. For patients battling a serious illness such as cancer or neurological disorders, it is strongly advised that heavy metals in the mouth be removed since these may be seeping into the body, causing metal deposits and damaging the central and peripheral nervous system.

  • History of the Huggins Protocol

Pioneered by Dr. Hal Huggins, the Huggins Protocol was created based on scientific research proving the harmful toxicity of dental materials and treatments—such as mercury fillings, BPAs from materials used, and toxic root canals. Dr. Huggins re-designed dental techniques to prevent patients from absorbing toxins during and after their dental visits. Thus, this philosophy of dentistry promotes optimal detoxifying of the body and sustainable oral & overall health.

In harmony with the Huggins Protocol and our clinics’ mission, our holistic dentist in Mexico uses a more natural and minimally invasive approach where “less is more”—the more natural tooth structure we can preserve with fewer interventions, the better!

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns icon

Crowns are dental restorations made of biologically-friendly porcelain or composite resin that cover a damaged or decayed tooth. They protect the tooth from further damage, restore its function, and restore its appearance. By restoring a damaged tooth, dental crowns equalize the muscle functions during chewing which contributes to better digestion and meridian health, which is linked to overall health.

Alt description

Inlays

Inlays icon

Inlays are dental restorations used to repair teeth with moderate decay or damage. They are made of biologically-friendly porcelain or composite resin and are custom-made to fit the shape of the tooth. Inlays provide a strong and durable restoration that can help restore the tooth and benefit your overall health.

Alt description

Onlays

Onlays icon

Onlays are similar to inlays but are used to repair more extensive damage to the tooth, yet not as much damage as a crown. They are custom-made to fit the shape of the tooth and provide a durable restoration.

Alt description

Veneers

Veneers icon

A popular smile makeover option, veneers are thin shells that are placed over the front surface of the tooth to improve its appearance! They are made of bio-friendly porcelain or composite resin and can completely change your smile–whether the teeth are discolored, misshapen, or have gaps between them.

Veneers can be used to change the color and shape of your teeth so your smile matches your face’s natural features. These smile makeovers can improve overall self-perception, confidence, and well-being. And by providing a perfectly aligned bite, veneers can also align your jaw and neck muscles, which play a role in TMJ, migraine headaches, and posture problems.

Bondings

Bondings icon

Dental bondings are used to for smaller, isolated repairs for teeth that are chipped, cracked, or discolored. They are made of a biological-compatible tooth-colored resin that is applied to the surface of the tooth and then shaped and polished to match the surrounding teeth. Similar to veneers, bondings can also be used in aesthetic or cosmetic dentistry to improve the appearance of damaged teeth, which can have a positive impact on overall confidence and well-being.

Mercury-free fillings

Mercury-free fillings

Mercury-free fillings icon

Our holistic approach for filling tooth cavities is to use a tooth-colored resin or composite that is compatible with the patient’s body. These composite fillings are used to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay. They are applied to the tooth and then shaped and polished to match the surrounding teeth. Composite fillings are a safer and more biocompatible option than traditional amalgam fillings, which contain mercury. A biological dentist does not use mercury fillings!

Cavities, also known as tooth decay, are a common dental problem that occurs when bacteria in the mouth produce acid that erodes tooth enamel. Left untreated, cavities can lead to tooth loss and other health problems. The benefits of treating cavities include preserving the affected tooth, preventing further decay, and restoring proper oral function. Our dentist provides this service to both adult and underage patients.
(children and adolescents).

Mercury Removal

Mercury removal icon

Mercury removal is a core principle of biological dentistry. In this process, your holistic dentist in Puerto Vallarta or Tijuana will safely remove amalgam fillings that contain mercury from the teeth. Mercury is a toxic substance that can be harmful to overall health, leeching heavy metals in the bloodstream and disrupting the meridians and nervous system–and this potentially leads to the development of severe health problems. By removing amalgam fillings and replacing them with safer materials, such as biologically compatible composite resin, mercury removal can improve the oral and overall health of patients.

Gum Line Contouring

Gum line contouring icon

Gum line contouring is a procedure used to reshape the gum line to improve the appearance of the teeth. It can be used to correct a gummy smile, an uneven gum line, or to create a more symmetrical smile. By improving the appearance of the teeth and gums, gum line contouring can improve overall confidence and well-being.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening icon

A biological dentist also provides aesthetic smile solutions, also known as cosmetic dentistry. Teeth whitening is a popular procedure used to brighten the color of opaque or stained teeth. It can be done in-office with special whitening materials used under the supervision of a dental professional or at home using custom-made trays that can be applied to the teeth by patients. With a nice white smile, you can smile more confidently and improve your self-esteem!

Dental Cleanings

Dental cleanings icon

Hygiene is of the utmost importance for your health. Dental cleaning is a procedure used to remove plaque and tartar that builds up on hard-to-reach surfaces of the teeth. A dental cleaning is recommended 2x per year to maintain good oral health. A regular dental cleaning can be compared to doing a regular cleanse twice a month or a colonic to remove the buildup of harmful toxins and pathogens.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction with Cavitation

Wisdom teeth extraction with cavitation icon

Wisdom teeth extraction with cavitation is a procedure used to remove wisdom teeth that are causing pain, making other teeth crooked due to crowding, or causing other functional problems such as TMJ disorder and malocclusion. Cavitation refers to the removal of infected or necrotic bone tissue from the extraction site. By removing wisdom teeth along with any infected bone tissue, we prevent harmful bacteria from entering the bloodstream or from damaging the nervous system. General dentists typically don’t perform this important action; instead, they knowingly or unknowingly close up the surgical site and let the patient’s immune system deal with the immense problem.

Alt description

Bone Surgery

Bone surgery icon

Our biological dentist is also a licensed oral surgeon who specializes in metal-free dental implants. Bone surgery is a procedure used to repair and regenerate bone tissue in the jaw. It can be used to treat conditions such as periodontitis, bone loss due to tooth extraction, and other conditions that affect the bone tissue in the jaw. Jaw bone surgery can also be used to prepare the patient for dental implants or to correct issues with a previous dental implant. In all dental surgeries, cavitation may also be used to remove infected or necrotic bone tissue from the extraction site and thereby prevent harmful bacteria from entering the bloodstream or from damaging the nervous system.

Dentures

Dentures icon

A denture is a removable prosthetic replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They help to restore the functionality of teeth (such as smiling, speaking, chewing, etc.) and improve the appearance of the mouth, which can enhance self-esteem and confidence. Dentures can also improve overall health by allowing people to eat a well-balanced diet, which is important for good nutrition.

Alt description

Zirconia Dental Implants

Zirconia dental implants icon

A dental implant is composed of a small post that is surgically placed into the jawbone with an attached natural-looking prosthetic tooth (called a crown). The dental implant may support 1 or more prosthetics to replace missing teeth. Zirconia implants are made of a durable biocompatible ceramic material, making them an excellent choice for people who are sensitive to metals. Because they mimic the natural function of a tooth, dental implants help to preserve bone density, maintain the alignment of remaining teeth, and restore normal biting and chewing functions.

Unlike traditional dental implants, which are made from metal, ceramic dental implants are less likely to cause an inflammatory response in the body, making them a safer and more biocompatible option for replacing missing teeth. Ceramic dental implants can improve overall health by reducing the risk of inflammation and immune dysfunction caused by metal dental implants. Your biological dentist in Puerto Vallarta and Tijuana will conduct a biocompatibility test to determine the best material to use for your dental implant.

Alt description

Titanium Dental Implants

Titanium dental implants icon

Like zirconia implants, titanium dental implants are also surgically placed into the jawbone and feature a natural-looking crown to replace missing teeth. Titanium implants are highly durable and have a proven track record of success. They also help to preserve bone density, maintain the alignment of remaining teeth, and restore normal biting and chewing functions. Your biological dentist at our Puerto Vallarta and Tijuana clinics will perform a biocompatibility test to determine the best material to use for your dental implant.

Alt description

Dental Posts

Dental posts icon

A dental post is a small titanium or zirconia rod that is surgically implanted in the jawbone to support a crown or other restoration above the gum line. Dental posts help to stabilize and strengthen the tooth and prevent further damage or decay.

Alt description

Bite Splints

Bite splints icon

A bite splint is a custom-fitted dental device that is worn over the teeth to protect them from grinding or clenching. Bite splints help to relieve jaw pain, headaches, and other symptoms associated with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder and teeth-grinding.

Alt description

Mouthguards

Mouthguard icon

A mouthguard is a custom-fitted dental device that is worn over the teeth to protect them from injury during sports or other physical activities. Mouthguards can help to prevent broken teeth, jaw injuries, and other oral trauma. Remember, each tooth in the oral cavity has a connection to the osteomuscular and nervous systems, so mouthguards are intended to prevent such imbalances.

Alt description

Orthodontics

Orthodontic Icon

You’ve seen braces before and know they are used to make the teeth symmetric. But orthodontics in biological dentistry at our Puerto Vallarta and Tijuana clinics goes beyond aesthetic symmetry; it is also used to achieve harmony in the meridians of the mouth. Since orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on correcting the alignment of teeth and jaws, each tooth that is aligned also aligns the nerve in the jawbone. Conventional orthodontics uses metal braces; self-ligated orthodontics use clear brackets; and ceramic braces use tooth-colored ceramic brackets. Orthodontic treatment can improve oral health by correcting bite issues, reducing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, and improving speech and digestion.

Alt description

Retainers

Retainers Icon

Once your orthodontic treatment has been completed, it is important to wear a retainer to prevent the teeth from shifting out of place again over time. Dental retainers are custom-fitted dental devices that are worn for a specific period after orthodontic treatment to help to maintain the results of orthodontic treatment and prevent the need for further intervention.

Alt description

Root Canals

Root Canals icon

While used conservatively, there are times when a root canal is preferred. Root canal treatment is a procedure that is used to remove infected or damaged tissue from inside a tooth. Root canals can save a damaged tooth and prevent the need for extraction, which can preserve overall oral health. Consult with your biological dentist whether this treatment option is best for you.

For young children, this procedure is also called pulp extraction, in which the damaged or infected pulp of a tooth is removed, and the tooth is cleaned and sealed. This procedure can save a damaged or infected tooth from extraction while the permanent tooth grows in. The benefits of pulp extraction include relieving pain, preserving the affected tooth, and preventing further infection or decay.

Alt description

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges icon

When a dental implant cannot be used to replace a missing tooth, a dental bridge may be used as an alternative to fill the gap. A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration that is used to replace one or more missing teeth. Bridges help to restore normal biting and chewing functions and prevent remaining teeth from shifting out of position.

Alt description

PRP & Ozone Injections

PRP and ozone injections icon

Injection of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and ozone are non-surgical treatments used to stimulate healing and regeneration of damaged tissues. These treatments are commonly used in dentistry to treat gum disease, periodontitis, and other oral health issues. Ozone therapy is a technique used in biological dentistry to disinfect and treat dental infections. It involves using ozone gas, which is a powerful oxidant, to kill bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens in the mouth. Ozone therapy is a minimally invasive and natural way to treat dental infections, and it has been shown to have a positive impact on overall health by reducing inflammation and improving immune function.

Alt description

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting icon

Bone grafting is a minor procedure in which jawbone tissue is surgically transplanted from one area to another to stimulate regrowth in your jaw and increase its height and/or width. The bone material used is usually your own (harvested from the pelvis or tibia) but it can also be tissue from a qualified donor or synthetic material. This bone grafting is typically done before a dental implant procedure to ensure there is enough bone to support the implant properly. The benefits of bone grafting include improving the stability and longevity of dental implants, preventing further bone loss, and providing a more natural-looking and comfortable dental restoration. There are different bone graft techniques. Ridge preservation is used to prepare the jaw for a dental implant or to minimize bone loss and gum recession in neighboring teeth after losing a tooth. Another grafting technique is called periodontal bone grafting, which is used to regrow damaged bone tissue caused by periodontal disease, thus helping save the affected tooth and avoid the need for an implant in the future. It’s important to note that if you lose a tooth and the gap remains without an implant, the jawbone will eventually start to deteriorate without a tooth anchoring it in place, despite a previous bone grafting procedure.

All-on-4 and All-on-6 Implants

All-on-4 and all-on-6 implants icon

All-on-4 and All-on-6 implant treatments are innovative dental implant procedures that allow patients to replace an entire arch of teeth with just four or six dental implants, respectively. This technique reduces the number of implants required, minimizes the overall treatment time, and reduces the cost of the procedure. The benefits of All-on-4 and All-on-6 implant treatments include improved oral function, aesthetics, and speech, increased confidence, and reduced risk of bone loss. When removable dentures are not preferred, your implant dentist in Puerto Vallarta and Tijuana can install a permanently fixed full set of prosthetic teeth that doesn’t slide, click, or accidentally fall out!

The best part? This revolutionary concept is a same-day procedure for patients missing all or most of their teeth. In one surgery, you can get a a full arch of prosthetic teeth and go home with a complete smile—no more waiting with temps for the implant to heal before getting your final crown! A proven, efficient, and affordable alternative to traditional dentures, this teeth-in-a-day treatment concept has been successfully performed on thousands of patients for decades. And unlike dentures, these dental implant prosthetics do not have to be removed for daily cleaning, replaced regularly, or reshaped periodically. And since these prosthetics don’t decay like natural teeth, this is a one-time investment in a beautiful smile that will last a lifetime!

Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric dentistry icon

Pediatric dentistry focuses on the oral health of children from infancy through adolescence. Pediatric dentists are trained to provide age-appropriate dental care and preventive treatments, such as fluoride treatments and dental sealants. The benefits of pediatric dentistry include establishing good oral hygiene habits at an early age, preventing dental problems before they start, and ensuring the healthy development of permanent teeth. Biological dentistry is all about achieving optimal oral health, and the best time to inculcate these principles and values is during childhood.

Alt description

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants icon

Dental sealants are a preventive treatment that involves applying a thin plastic coating to the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars to prevent decay. Sealants are most commonly used in children, but adults can benefit from them as well. The benefits of sealants include preventing decay, reducing the need for future dental treatments, and maintaining oral health.

Alt description

Space Maintainers

Space maintainers icon

Space maintainers are dental devices for children that help maintain the space between teeth when a tooth is lost prematurely. These devices prevent teeth from shifting into the open space and causing misalignment. The benefits of space maintainers include maintaining proper tooth alignment, preventing future dental problems, and preserving oral health. This service falls under the umbrella of pediatric dentistry. Pediatric dentistry focuses on the oral health of children from infancy through adolescence.

How does it work? The science behind biological dentistry

Although a biological dentist is certified and licensed as a DDS or DMD by organizations such as the American Dental Association, bio-dentistry is not in itself a sub-specialty of dentistry, but rather, a unique, holistic approach based on scientific research.
As this woman smiles, the icons explain how each tooth in her mouth is connected to a meridian and organ system
  • How are my teeth related to other organs in the body?

Each tooth’s root is a nerve. Nerves form an essential part of your nervous system, each nerve linking the entire system together. What happens when one link in a chain is defective? The whole chain suffers!

In essence, that is what the meridians in the mouth are like—specific pathways or channels of energy flow (known as Qi in Chinese acupuncture) that are connected to various organs and body systems. For this reason, the health of the mouth is closely linked to overall health and well-being. For example, the proper alignment of teeth contributes to improving temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders or even issues with posture resulting from stress on cervical vertebrae.

Based on acupuncture studies of the meridians, biological dentists meticulously design treatment protocols that will also restore balance to the meridians associated with each tooth in the jaw.

  • How do I know what materials my body is biocompatible with?

Your holistic dentist in Mexico will conduct a biocompatibility test to determine what materials you are sensitive to by identifying substances that produce an immune response in your body. Biocompatibility testing is a type of testing used in biological dentistry to determine a person’s compatibility with certain dental materials. This testing involves taking a blood or saliva sample and exposing it to different dental materials to see if there is an immune response.

By identifying which materials a person is compatible with, biocompatibility testing can help reduce the risk of adverse reactions and improve overall health by reducing inflammation and immune dysfunction. Why should you care about this? To illustrate, you don’t want your body attacking the dental implant for the rest of your life—you could develop an autoimmune condition or your immune system will become inefficient and tired from fighting a never-winning battle.
